Mobutu the cannibal dictator?

The Cannibal Dictator

Sese Seko Mobutu was the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) from 1965 to 1997. During his rule, I knew him for his authoritarian and corrupt leadership style, and for the human rights abuses committed under his regime. There are no facts that support the claim that he was a cannibal.

Mobutu rose to power in 1965, following a coup d'état that deposed the democratically elected Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. He ruled the country as a dictator, suppressing political opposition and amassing immense wealth through corrupt practices.

Widespread human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and the use of forced labor marked Mobutu's rule. He also suppressed the freedom of the press, and political opposition.

Economic mismanagement and corruption, which led to widespread poverty and economic decline in the country also marked Mobutu's regime. Rebel forces led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila finally deposed him in 1997, and he went into exile in Morocco, where he died in 1997.
