Terror in the Land of a Thousand Hills.
The Rwanda Genocide was a tragic event that occurred between April and July 1994 during the Rwandan Civil War. Rwanda, a landlocked country in East Africa, with borders with Uganda, Burundi,Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo, was plunged intoa a civil war when armed Hutu militias targeted members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group, as well as some moderate Hutu and Twa. The scale and brutality of the genocide were shocking, with an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 Tutsi deaths.
The genocide was preceded by years of ethnic tensions and political instability in Rwanda. The assassination of Hutu President Juvénal Habyarimana on April 6, 1994, sparked the genocidal killings the following day. Hutu soldiers, police, and militia targeted key Tutsi and moderate Hutu leaders, and the violence quickly spread across the country.
Despite the international community's awareness of the genocide, there was a lack of intervention to forcefully stop the killings. Most victims were murdered in their own villages, often by their neighbors and fellow villagers. The Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), a rebel group composed mostly of Tutsi refugees, eventually captured all government territory, ending the genocide .
Today Rwanda is far more peaceful than it was in 1994. Toured as the Tech Hub of Africa, The Stratification of the citizens that led to the civil war is abolished and democracy installed in the Central African Nation. Rwanda is known for its efforts in reconciliation and rebuilding following the 1994 genocide, during which an estimated 800,000 people were killed in a period of 100 days.The government of Rwanda has implemented various initiatives to promote gender equality, including having one of the highest rates of female representation in parliament in the world. Presently a popular tourist destination, Rwanda is known for its diverse wildlife, including mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, as well as its vibrant culture and history.
